Monster crown laz8/31/2023 ![]() He got the band name from a friend, Ron Quintana, who was brainstorming names for a heavy metal fanzine he was creating, and Metallica was one of the options, the other being "Metal Mania." Ulrich encouraged him to choose Metal Mania, and used the name Metallica for himself. Later in 1981, Ulrich met James Hetfield in Downey, California, and they formed the heavy metal band Metallica upon Ulrich securing a spot in a compilation album of local metal bands named Metal Massacre. James Hetfield replied to the ad, and Metallica was formed. Upon returning to the U.S., Ulrich placed an advert in a local classifieds newspaper looking for musicians to start a band with him. Ulrich remains a fan of Diamond Head and would later mix their album The Best of Diamond Head. He was excited about the band's style of music after purchasing their debut album Lightning to the Nations, and traveled from San Francisco to London to see the band perform live at the Woolwich Odeon. In 1981, he discovered British heavy metal band Diamond Head. In the documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, Ulrich states that witnessing a Y&T show was his defining moment in deciding to become a musician. Despite being ranked in the top ten tennis players of his age group in Denmark, Ulrich failed to make it into the seven man Corona del Mar High School tennis team, contributing to his decision to focus on music. Ulrich originally intended to follow in his father's footsteps and play tennis, and he moved to Newport Beach, California, in the summer of 1980. The concert and album had a considerable impact on Ulrich, inspiring the start of his music career.Īs a result of his newfound interest in music, he received his first drum kit, a Ludwig, from his grandmother around the age of 12 or 13. When one of the friends could not go, they gave their ticket to the nine-year-old Lars, who was mesmerized by the performance and bought the band's album Fireball the next day. In February 1973, Ulrich's father obtained passes for five of his friends to a Deep Purple concert held in the same Copenhagen stadium as one of his tennis tournaments. Saxophonist Dexter Gordon was Ulrich's godfather, and he is a childhood friend of musician Neneh Cherry. His paternal grandmother, Ulla Meyer, was from a Jewish family as a result, Ulrich's grandfather was persecuted by the Nazis during World War II. His paternal grandfather was tennis player Einer Ulrich. Ulrich was born into an upper-middle-class family in Gentofte, Denmark the son of Lone ( née Sylvester-Hvid) and tennis player Torben Ulrich. Along with Hetfield, Ulrich has songwriting credits on almost all of the band's songs, and the two of them are the only remaining original members of the band. After publishing an advertisement in The Recycler, Ulrich met James Hetfield and formed Metallica. However, rather than playing tennis, Ulrich began playing drums. The son and grandson respectively of tennis players Torben and Einer Ulrich, he played tennis in his youth and moved to Los Angeles at age 16 to train professionally. Lars Ulrich R ( / ˈ ʊ l r ɪ k/ Danish: born 26 December 1963) is a Danish musician best known as the drummer and co-founder of American heavy metal band Metallica.

![]() “CRaC allows a running application to pause, snapshot its state, and store it for later use – even on a different machine. It is the same issue AWS addressed with its Snapstart feature introduced at the re:Invent conference late last year. This might not matter with long-running applications, but in a microservices world where containers running parts of an application, or serverless functions, are constantly starting and stopping, it makes a big difference. Java applications require a runtime, the JVM (Java Virtual Machine), which means that application startup is relatively slow, as the JVM has to load and initialize before the application code runs. The problem addressed by CRaC is an important one. ![]() So you lose that cross-platform functionality … I don’t think it’s going to make it into the mainstream any time soon.” Start-up performance with and without CRaC The reason it isn’t in the mainstream yet, and I’m not even sure it will make it into the mainstream, is that we rely on the CRIU technology underneath on Linux, and there isn’t an equivalent that we’re aware of on Windows or on Mac. Another is that it requires a feature of Linux called Checkpoint/Restore In Userspace (CRIU), undermining a core feature of Java, namely that it runs cross-platform.Īzul deputy CTO Simon Ritter told DevClass: “We submitted CRaC to OpenJDK as an idea for a project … and they’ve included it as one of the many project they have. One is that CRaC requirements mean that many Java applications and frameworks will not work with it unless modified. ![]() The Azul-led CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) project aims to greatly improve the startup time of Java applications by using a cached image, and last week hit an important milestone: the general availability of OpenJDK 17 with CRaC support.

Turbotax 1040x delayed8/31/2023 ![]() ![]() If you historically have filed on time, you might qualify for the First Time Abatement program, which will help you avoid any fees. (The amount is cut considerably if you work out a payment agreement with the IRS.) I can’t pay my taxes now, but I’ve always done so in the past. Late payment penalties are generally 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month, though that can build to as much as 25%. Otherwise, the penalty can be as much as 5% of the unpaid tax each month up to a maximum of 25%. If you file your return more than 60 days late, you’re likely looking at a minimum penalty of $210 (unless you owe less than that-in which case the penalty is 100% of the unpaid tax). There are two kinds of fees and penalties that could be assessed on top of any taxes you might owe-one for filing late and another for paying late. And you’ll have to pay any owed taxes on that estimate by the regular deadline, April 18. In order to claim a tax refund, a tax amendment has to be filed within 3 years you. You will need to estimate your tax liability, even if you haven’t calculated it. The IRS can take up to 16 weeks (or 4 months) to process amended returns. What do you mean I have to pay my taxes now? People impacted by natural disasters in California, Alabama, and Georgia were given a new filing deadline of Oct. This is the fastest and easiest way to track your refund. Use the IRS Where's My Refund tool or the IRS2Go mobile app to check your refund online. That follows earlier announcements that storm-affected people in Mississippi will also have until July 31 to file and that New Yorkers who got slammed with severe winter storms have been given until May 15 to file their returns. Before checking on your refund, have your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact whole dollar amount of your refund ready. The Internal Revenue Service announced earlier this month that storm victims in Arkansas will have until July 31 to file their returns (for both individuals and businesses). Who can file for a tax extension?Īnyone can file an extension, but some people, in areas that have been hit by severe storms, don’t need to. You can also file via mail using Form 4868 or via your tax professional. (Tax software from TurboTax, e-File and H&R Block can also file the request.) The quickest way is via Free File, where you can electronically request one, which will extend your filing date until Oct. Here’s a look at the ins and out, as well as how to file an extension. Unfortunately, it’s just for the paperwork. Fortunately, the IRS is happy to offer you an extension.

Helios statue replica8/31/2023 Strategically located in close proximity to Asia Minor, Middle Eastern and African trade routes, Rhodes was a major Aegean port. Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.-Micah 5:13 (KJV). The abomination broke off at the knees, sending the upper torso toppling to the ground. According to historians, Ptolemy III of Egypt offered to reconstruct it, but an oracle by the Rhodes advised against it. In 226 BC, an earthquake, notably recalled by historians as one of the worst quakes in human history, rocked the isle of Rhodes. ![]() And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground. Isaiah 40:19-20(KJV).Ĭhares interestingly enough was also a student of the sculptor who designed and crafted the abominable statue of “Zeus.”Ĭosting 300 talents, construction of the Helios statue began in 294 BC, and would take nearly 12 years to complete.įor 54 years, this abomination sat near the harbor of Rhodes, that is, until it was struck down by God.Īnd, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. 20 He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved. The statue was built by Chares of Lindos, a native, who apparently by historical chronicles was familiar with crafting abominations like this before.ġ9 The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains. Made of iron and bronze, Helios once stood at a staggering height of 98-feet (30 meters) tall, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world. ![]() Notice Helios’ striking resemblance to the Statue of Liberty. The original statue or as I call it, “the abomination” was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World due to its menacing height. The statue had been built, as a sign of worship and a token of thanks to the Greek gods for helping Rhodes’ win the victory over the ruler of Cyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus, whose son unsuccessfully besieged Rhodes in 305 BC. The Rhodians, erected the statue during the reign of Seleukos son of Nikanor, successor of Alexander the Great. Remember his punishment? and as we all know, Babylonia will be subject to God’s wrath during tribulation. The Helios statue is a metaphor associated with King Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream, and was the center of provocation to God’s anger against the Babylonians, and King Nebuchadnezzar. ![]() This story is a piece of the prophetic end-times puzzle and most definitely a sign of the times. It is Babylon rising. Taking place in Greece, which represents the “bronze” portion of the statue mentioned in the second chapter of Daniel. The site listed the following two videos that explain the project in detail.Īside from the fact that this statue is a revival of “sun worship,” from the pantheon Babylonian era, it contains a rich and biblically connected past. The prefixed aim was an ambitious one: building a modern Colossus of Rhodes, following 21st –century standards, a contemporary 150-meters-tall building which would be used as a cultural center, as a library an exhibition hall and a lighthouse. ![]() The project was born in the ideas, the expectations and the hopes of some young professionals from different European countries: Greece, Spain, Italy and UK. Sharing the name of the abominable statue, The group maintains a website called “ Colossal Rhodes,” An excerpt from the website reads: A museum inside the statue would display ancient Greek treasures currently stored away.

DO NOT approach on foot or in your vehicle. And when all of the proper safety precautions are taken, it can be one of the park’s most enthralling and memorable wildlife viewing experiences.īe aware that during this time, male elk can be highly aggressive and will charge cars and people. Safety should always be a visitors’ number one priority when visiting Yellowstone during the elk rut. Keep your distance, stay close to (or in) your vehicle, and enjoy them safely. The last thing you want to do is tangle with an amped up bull elk or bison – both have been known to attack visitors and cars. It’s critical to maintain the park’s required distance of 25 yards, and even a bit extra. While the rut is exciting to witness, bison and elk are highly aggressive and unpredictable during this time. Mating in August and September enables the calves to be born in the spring when they have the best chance to survive, and choosing the most vigorous males helps ensure the calves vitality. Fool-proof operation: simply push for perfect cow elk sounds every time. For best success, breeding bulls should be three years old or older. ![]() Their behavior is all about calf survival. The most accurate and consistent cow call youll ever hear. The rut, controlled by the day/night cycle, is from late August to late October. That’s not entirely true watch closely, and you’ll see that it’s the females who actually make the choice, tolerating a bull they find attractive, and running away from those they don’t. If that doesn’t settle the debate then they may go head to head – in a giant shoving match that can sometimes prove fatal.Ī common misconception is that the bulls-both elk and bison-are in charge. Fights are rare, because no one really wants to get hurt bison and elk instead rely on vocal displays, body gestures, and olfactory cues to figure out who’s bigger and stronger. Once the peak of mating season arrives the bulls have already established a pecking order. ![]() ![]() While everyone hopes to see a fight between bull elk or bison, it doesn’t happen as often as you might think. Watching in the village itself is easiest, but if you want to get away from the crowds you might try exploring Swan Lake Flats and the Madison Valley. Mammoth Hot Springs is grand central for the elk rut. It’s an experience unlike any other in the park, with bull elk bugling ranging from low throaty sounds or a series of deep grunts to high pitch whistles. ![]() Have you ever heard the sound an elk makes during the fall rut? It’s a thrilling, yet haunting experience that draws thousands of visitors to Yellowstone each fall. Watching and listening to the eerie bugle of the bulls as they jockey for position and guard their harems is one of the true highlights of fall in Yellowstone. Unlike bison, who guard one female at a time, bull elk compete for access to a group of a dozen or so females, known as a harem. Otherworldly bugles-the vocalizing of bull elk-cut through the frosty pre-dawn and the herds coalesce into larger groups. A little over a month later, in mid-September, the elk mating season begins.

Judith butler gender performative8/30/2023 ![]() Her reading of classical psychoanalytical works (more specifically, Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan) also influenced her, as can be seen in The Psychic Life of Power (1997), a study on the psyche of power within which subjects are constituted. This work revolves around the issue of how non-heterosexual practices shake normative categories of gender. Her book Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) thrust her to the spotlight. In her enterprise to problematize the concept of gender, she thinks and criticizes authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Monique Wittig or Gayle Rubin. Her thought has been influenced by very diverse authors, in which Michel Foucault plays a crucial role. Her reflections on the genealogy of subjects and the production of identities, the power fields in which they emerge, the role of the otherness of the self, and performativity, are the common threads that spread through her extensive and varied work. She received her PhD in Philosophy at Yale with a thesis on Hegel’s impact on 20 th century French thought. ![]() A prominent activist and philosopher, her contributions in the fields of feminist and queer theory, as well as gender studies, have caused a great impact in areas as diverse as political theory, literary studies, psychoanalysis and law. It’s my view that gender is culturally formed, but it’s also a domain of agency or freedom and that it is most important to resist the violence that is imposed by ideal gender norms, especially against those who are gender different, who are nonconforming in their gender presentation.Judith Butler is Maxine Elliot Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Program of Critical Theory at the University of California, Berkeley. I think there is a real question for me about how such gender norms get established and policed and what the best way is to disrupt them and to overcome the police function. So there are institutional powers like psychiatric normalization and there are informal kinds of practices like bullying which try to keep us in our gendered place. Judith Butler: Think about how difficult it is for sissy boys or how difficult it is for tomboys to function socially without being bullied or without being teased or without sometimes suffering threats of violence or without their parents intervening to say maybe you need a psychiatrist or why can’t you be normal. Question: How should this notion of gender performativity change the way we look at gender? I know it’s controversial, but that’s my claim. We act as if that being of a man or that being of a women is actually an internal reality or something that is simply true about us, a fact about us, but actually it’s a phenomenon that is being produced all the time and reproduced all the time, so to say gender is performative is to say that nobody really is a gender from the start. I was walking down the street in Berkeley when I first arrived several years ago and a young woman who was I think in high school leaned out of her window and she yelled, “Are you a lesbian?”, and she was looking to harass me or maybe she was just freaked out or she thought I looked like I probably was one or wanted to know and I thought to myself well I could feel harassed or stigmatized, but instead I just turned around and I said yes I am and that really shocked her. We act and walk and speak and talk in ways that consolidate an impression of being a man or being a woman. ![]() To say that gender is performative is a little different because for something to be performative means that it produces a series of effects. When we say gender is performed we usually mean that we’ve taken on a role or we’re acting in some way and that our acting or our role playing is crucial to the gender that we are and the gender that we present to the world. Judith Butler: It’s one thing to say that gender is performed and that is a little different from saying gender is performative. ![]() Question: What does it mean that gender is performative? While her academic writing is dense, Butler has a wonderful and engaging way of talking. Judith Butler explains ‘gender performativity’, a term that refers to the ways in which gender norms are established, policed and resisted. |
